He was a Wood Turner. Widowed and living with son Mathew in 1851, and in 1861 at age 81. Died Q1 1866.

Mathew Woolley 1815 - 1899

(Note: surname sometimes WOOLEY/WOOLLY, "Mathew" with one "t"). Born at Longhope, Gloucestershire. Working as a Wood Turner.

Married Elizabeth KNIGHT 26/10/1841 at Longhope. Prior to marriage, she was a House Maid. Witnesses were John KNIGHT and Hannah KNIGHT. The officiating vicar was Robert Napier Raikes, a member of a famous Gloucestershire family.
Children:

Wife Elizabeth was born 1819, at Longhope, christened 15/6/1819. Her parents William, a Tanner, and Elizabeth SAUNDERS, married at Newland 17/11/1806. Her siblings: John (chr. 8/11/1812), Charlotte (chr 21/1/1816), Hannah (chr 29/4/1821), William (chr 28/12/1828), and Thomas (chr 12/12/1830).

1851 census
At 1861 census they lived at 28 Hopes Hill, Longhope, Gloucestershire.
1871 census

Elizabeth died Q2 1875 aged 57. Mathew died at Newent Q3 1899, aged 84.

James Woolley 1858 -

James was born at Longhope, Gloucestershire, Q1 1858 and christened at Longhope 14/3/1858.

Married Annie WEBB (See The Webb Family Tree ) at Barton-Upon-Irwell Registry Office Q1 1888. Witnesses were Joseph James BEASLEY and John Walter JOLLEY.

Children:

At the 1891 census , they lived at 314 Manchester Rd, Barton-upon-Irwell, Lancashire, where James was a Coal Miner.

By the 1901 census Annie had become widowed and was "living on own means" with her children and a servant at 7 Alma Place Gloucester. One-month-old Clarence is listed as a WOOLLEY, although later referred to as KNIGHT; the other children remained as WOOLLEY.

Annie married Benjamin KNIGHT 25/7/1903 and lived at 19 Alma Place, Bristol Road, Gloucester. Benjamin was born at St. George, Gloucestershire 1870/1 to John and Sophia KNIGHT.

Children:

See 1911 census

Gertrude (Gert) WOOLLEY never married but had three children: Joan, and twins Jim and John. Everybody remembers Gert as the life of any party; her favourite song was "Knees up Mother Brown".

James Woolley's death is hard to pin down. He was alive for the census 5/4/1891; he was presumably alive for the conception of Beatrice, about 6/1896, but Annie was a widow by the census 31/3/1901. Presumably he had died by the time of the conception of Clarence, about 6/1900. A total of 18 "James Woolley"s died in England in the 1896-1900 period; 11 of them have a middle name. Of the 7 plain James, 3 are too old; the other 4 have no age listed. Best guess is that he died at Wigan, Lancashire, Q4 1897 aged 39. Annie died Q3 1942 in Gloucester, aged 78. Benjamin died Q3 1931 in Gloucester, aged 61.
