William Gresty 1827 - 1905

Born near Chester, Cheshire. His exact date and place of birth are hard to pin down - he gave different responses at each census.
1841: age 14
1851: age 23, born Latchford Lancashire
1861: age 30, born Chester
1871: age 44, born Stockton Heath, Cheshire
1881: age 49, born Staverton, Cheshire
Staverton doesn't exist, Chester might be shorthand for Cheshire. Stockton Heath and Latchford, although in different counties, are only a few miles apart. 1841 residence was "Tarvin township of Clotton Hoofield" - maybe this was misheard in various ways.

Married Ann(e) Kite (Kate) SMITH at

St.Peters in Minsterworth 24/9/1850. William's surname, and his father's surname was wrongly recorded as GRESS; perhaps partly because William couldn't write - he signed with a mark. Ann, however, signed her name. Witnesses were William WILLIAMS and Jemima HYETT.

  Married Annie WILLIAMS in Cardiff Q4 1889. In 1891,they lived at Llantrisant, Glamorgan, in Wales where he worked as a coal miner. In 1911 they were back in Gloucester, where he was a dock labourer.

  Married Charles Frederick KINGSCOTT at St.James Gloucester Q2 1884. Emma Laura Agnes GRESTY born Q2 1884, no father listed, guess it fits here. Emma Laura Agnes died Q4 1884 aged 0.

  married Lucy Maria CARTER at St.James church, Gloucester Q1 1889; their children were William John born Q2 1889 (!), Sydney Thomas 1890-1896 , Mabel Elizabeth 1892-1896, Annie 1894, Matilda 1897, Blanch 1900, Edith Agnes Maud 1904, Birt (Bert?) 1907
• Agnes Maud Mary 1867 -
  married William Samuel CARTER at St.Nicholas church, Gloucester in 1886; their children were Emily Maria Annie 1887, Laura Annie 1889.
• Laura Ada 1870

Ann was born in Minsterworth 1831, christened 13/10/1831; her parents were Daniel SMITH, a labourer, and Phoebe. Her brother Charles was christened 1/5/1836.

In the 1881 census, William GRESTY (49), John GRESTY (20) and Sydney GRESTY (14) were boarding with the Freeman family, following the death of wife Anne Q3 1879 in Gloucester aged 49.

William died Q4 1905 in Gloucester, aged 73
